    It's great to have the original audio AND your audio - hearing several different speakers helps tremendously. I can say I far prefer your reading versus the original. The original reading is sort of drab. I'm trying to use Per Se Illustrata for pronunciation, an old dictionary (1912 by White) for vocabulary, and two older series of textbooks (1930's - 1950's) for grammar as I find they are far more clear than newer texts; and having 2 sets of textbooks helps learning a lot as they tend to cover things slightly different, and in different depths. I'm just waiting for the day I can read some of the classics in their original form..!

    I'm wondering whether there is any difference in the pronunciation of φ and π in the Ancient Greek of your choosing. Apparently, the former is meant to be aspirated, but both sounds in φοιβος and Απολλον feel identical to my untrained ear. To be fair, I struggle with the idea that π can at all be pronounced without the trailing aspiration.

    • @ScorpioMartianus
      @ScorpioMartianus 2 дні тому

      Hi there, yes the difference between φ and π is quite pronounced in Classical Attic Pronunciation; its the difference of phonemic aspiration, which is fundamental to the phonological systems of many languages, including Ancient Greek and Sanskrit in antiquity, and Hindi and Chinese today. See this video to learn all about it: ua-cam.com/video/dQBpwKWnZAo/v-deo.htmlsi=WfGOXAC3Rm4FbtPW

    Hi! How do you pronounce double vowels in classical Latin? For example: cotidie or filii. Do you pronounce them regularly or do you have to use a glottal stop? I'm Italian so I wouldn't use it, but Duolingo is messing with my head. Thank you!

    Luke, love your stuff! About 7 years ago, I began to learn Latin prayers. My method appears to be the same as the two steps here, but a little different. First I learn to pronounce all words, then translate Latin to English. Then memorize. I say them every day and add a line or two in Latin and finish in English. As soon as the most recent added lines have been memorized, I add one or two more. This has been very effective. The key is to speak them daily. using this method, I have learned to easily attack a new set of prayers and when I read one with which I am not familiar, and since I know many words already(2000 to 2500), the texts are familiar and welcoming, but challenging enough to take them on and learn them.

    You are doing a wonderful job Luke! Everything is wonderful! Except the lady who loves beans among the ancient foods. Apart from some similar species of Chinese origin already present in ancient times, the beans we know were imported into Europe guess from where? From America, after its discovery. Well after the Roman Empire and even after the Middle Ages.

    So Latin numbers, above 20, literally translate as "x and xx." Ex: "1 and 20," "2 and 40," or in this case "1 and 60." Maybe that's where German gets it from? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

      English used to be like Latin and German in this regard. There is, in fact, a theory that this change of order occured as a result of French influence! though I won't vouch for it...

    I find it harder to read fluently when using this system though. Perhaps it just takes practice, but it causes me to pay to much attention to the meter, which comes just naturally if the long and short vowels also have different qualities.
